This turn-based role-playing game is set in the fantasy world of Midkemia, where a party journeys from the northern border of the Kingdom of the Isles to Krondor to warn of an impending invasion by dark elves. Betrayal at Krondor presents its story in nine chapters, with the chapter order and key events predetermined.
The player controls a party of two or three warriors and mages. Their names, relationships, and classes are set by the story, while their skills can be developed in different directions. Travel through the world and dungeons is shown from a first-person perspective, while combat uses a third-person view and proceeds in turns. Between main events, the party can explore accessible areas and take on optional quests; hidden wordlock chests are opened by solving riddles.
