Breakers is a fighting game built around a worldwide martial arts tournament, drawing competitors in search of fame, fortune or revenge. The event is backed by an evil spirit that has possessed a man from Hong Kong and gained power through black magic.

Fighters face off one-on-one, using standard and special attacks as well as dashes, back-steps and rolls; each character handles these moves differently. Energy builds through special actions and is spent on super moves. Players can link super moves into combos until their energy runs out, while damage adjustment helps balance the characters. In single-player mode, a computer-controlled fighter using the same character as the player appears under a different name.
