Ten gatunek powstał z gier fabularnych na stole. Użytkownik kontroluje bohatera lub grupę, które muszą komunikować się z postaciami niezależnymi i walczyć z wrogami. Wszyscy oni mają różne parametry, cyfrowe cechy i określone umiejętności. Proces gry w gry fabularne może być turowy lub odbywać się w czasie rzeczywistym. Gry fabularne dzielą się na dwa typy: jedne są nastawione tylko na walkę i dają graczowi szeroki wybór umiejętności bojowych i uzbrojenia, a inne dają większą swobodę i pozwalają na realizację niektórych zadań nawet bez przystępowania do walki, stosując umiejętności retoryki, skradania się itp. Drugi typ gier fabularnych charakteryzuje się głębokim światem, interesującą fabułą i dużą liczbą zadań pobocznych.
