Gatunek „wizualna powieść” obejmuje projekty, w których stawka opiera się na fabule, która przedstawiana jest w formie dialogów, fragmentów dziennika lub listów. Przy tym opowieść praktycznie nigdy się nie zatrzymuje: trwa nawet w trakcie rozgrywki lub sporadycznie robi małe przerwy. Rozgrywka w takich grach może w ogóle nie występować.
