Guild Wars 2 is an online role-playing game set in the open world of Tyria, where characters encounter inhabitants with their own stories and goals. Exploration involves finding landmarks, completing tasks, and taking part in dynamic events; players can help characters or thwart their plans, and gain experience through activities such as gathering resources and rescuing allies.

Players choose a profession and weapons, then shape their combat style by unlocking and selecting skills and traits. In the open world, they can interact with other players and join forces against world bosses without having to form a party. Structured PvP is a separate mode in which all participants compete at the same level, with access to max-level gear and build options.
