Dzięki dużej liczbie wysokiej jakości gier na PlayStation, do lipca 2008 roku sprzedano ponad 102,49 mln konsol na całym świecie. Konsola uczyniła firmę Sony jednym z głównych graczy na rynku. Najlepszą z najlepszych gier na PlayStation stała się Gran Turismo. Następcą konsoli była PlayStation 2.
