On October 21, 2026, EA announced BioWare's closure and canceled the next Mass Effect. The series' future is uncertain, but the original trilogy and Andromeda still offer plenty to discover or revisit. Nearly twenty years in, there are three numbered entries, a pile of DLC, spin-offs, novels and comics — it's easy to get lost. So here's the whole series laid out: what order to play it in, where the DLC fits, and the easiest way in today.

First, let's separate two things. For Mass Effect, release order and story order line up almost perfectly: the original trilogy is one continuous story, played strictly 1 → 2 → 3, and that's exactly how it came out. The odd one out is Mass Effect: Andromeda — a separate expedition to another galaxy, barely tied to Shepard's story. So the "right order" is simple for a newcomer; the nuance hides in the DLC and the save transfers.

Mass Effect in release order

Every key release by year — and for the trilogy, this doubles as the recommended play order:

  • 2007 — Mass Effect (Xbox 360, later PC);
  • 2010 — Mass Effect 2 (Xbox 360, PC; PS3 in 2011);
  • 2012 — Mass Effect 3 (Xbox 360, PC, PS3);
  • 2017 — Mass Effect: Andromeda (PC, PS4, Xbox One) — a separate branch in another galaxy;
  • 2021 — Mass Effect Legendary Edition (PC, PS4, Xbox One) — the remastered trilogy, the easiest way in today.

The original trilogy: Shepard's saga

The heart of the series is three games about Commander Shepard and the war against the Reapers. Play them strictly in order: each entry carries over your choices from the last, right down to which squadmates live to see the finale. The franchise has had its highs and lows over the years — we went through BioWare's biggest stumbles separately.

Mass Effect (2007)

  • Developer: BioWare;
  • Genre: action RPG;
  • Platforms: Xbox 360, PC; PS4 and Xbox One via Legendary Edition;
  • Release date: 2007.

Where it all began. Mass Effect introduces Commander Shepard, the frigate Normandy, and a threat nobody takes seriously at first. You build your hero, pick a class, and make the first decisions that echo two games down the line: who to save, who to trust, what to do with an entire species. The combat is the most dated of the three, but the drama of those choices starts right here.

Mass Effect 2 (2010)

  • Developer: BioWare;
  • Genre: action RPG;
  • Platforms: Xbox 360, PC, PlayStation 3;
  • Release date: 2010 (PS3 in 2011).

Plenty of fans call Mass Effect 2 the high point — largely because of the crew. The whole game is built around assembling a team for a "suicide mission," and how well you prepare — loyalty missions, Normandy upgrades and the right squad picks in the finale — decides who makes it back alive. This is where importing your first-game save really bites: the fallout from your choices meets you at every turn.

Mass Effect 3 (2012)

  • Developer: BioWare;
  • Genre: action RPG;
  • Platforms: Xbox 360, PC, PlayStation 3, Wii U;
  • Release date: 2012.

Mass Effect 3 is Shepard's finale and the bill coming due. The galaxy is overrun, and the game pulls together everything you did across the first two entries: which species show up to help, which old faces stand beside you, who you already lost. The endings caused a famous uproar, so BioWare later put out the free Extended Cut that fleshes them out (it's already baked into Legendary Edition). We reviewed the game in full in our Mass Effect 3 review.

DLC in order: what to play and when

The trilogy has a lot of add-ons, and some aren't side content — they're chunks of the main story. The full route per game, with the critical spots flagged (in Legendary Edition most of this is already bundled in):

  • Mass Effect — Bring Down the Sky works any time, as a regular side mission. The standalone Pinnacle Station isn't in Legendary Edition: its source code was lost, so the combat simulator never made it into the remaster.
  • Mass Effect 2 — there are lots of story beats, and most (Overlord, Firewalker, the Normandy Crash Site visit) can be played whenever. But recruit the two extra squadmates — Zaeed and Kasumi — early, so they're part of your campaign and you can clear their loyalty missions before the finale. Lair of the Shadow Broker makes the most sense after you've grown close to Liara. And save Arrival for the very end, after the main campaign: it's the direct bridge into the third game.
  • Mass Effect 3 — From Ashes unlocks right at the start of the campaign, as soon as the Eden Prime mission becomes available: don't sit on it, it adds the Prothean squadmate Javik. Leviathan and Omega slot into the mid-game. Save Citadel for close to the finale, but do it before the point of no return — it's a warm send-off with the crew. And the Extended Cut endings just need to be installed (they're built into Legendary Edition).

Save transfers: how your choices carry over

The trilogy's signature trick is consequences that follow you. You create Shepard in the first game, and your save carries the decisions forward: who lived, what happened to the Council and entire species, who you romanced. The second and third games read that data and reshape scenes, dialogue and even your endgame allies around it. Legendary Edition keeps it simple — the import lives inside the collection: finish the first game and you import that Shepard when you start the second, no external save files to juggle. If you jump straight into the second or third game (you can), a short interactive comic lets you set the key decisions instead — but that's not the same as living them.

The spin-off branch: Mass Effect Andromeda

Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017)

  • Developer: BioWare;
  • Genre: action RPG;
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One;
  • Release date: 2017.

Mass Effect: Andromeda isn't a continuation of Shepard's story — it's a fresh start. The action moves to another galaxy, one the colonists spend centuries traveling to, and you play a Pathfinder searching for humanity's new home. The expedition leaves the Milky Way back during the trilogy era and only arrives some six hundred years later, so its events technically sit much later while barely overlapping with the original. You can play Andromeda without knowing the trilogy, though the background adds context. It launched to a rough reception and never got story DLC, but as a standalone space adventure it holds up.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition: where to start today

Mass Effect Legendary Edition (2021)

  • Developer: BioWare (remaster);
  • Genre: remastered trilogy collection;
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One (also runs on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S);
  • Release date: 2021.

If you're coming into the series in 2026, this is the easiest place to begin. Mass Effect Legendary Edition is the whole trilogy remastered in one package: cleaned-up visuals, reworked combat and controls in the first game (which got the biggest overhaul), and nearly every single-player add-on included. What's missing: the third game's multiplayer and the first game's lone Pinnacle Station DLC. It doesn't hurt the story — the old "war readiness" progress was rebalanced so a solo player isn't left short. Not sure it's worth diving in today? We weighed that up in Is It Worth Playing the Mass Effect Trilogy in 2026?.

Mass Effect books and comics

The universe doesn't stop at the games — between entries there were novels and comics that fill story gaps and flesh out characters' backstories. None are required to follow the games, but they add context for fans.

Novels

  • Revelation — a prequel to the whole series: how Anderson and Saren became enemies before the first game;
  • Ascension — set between the first and second games;
  • Retribution — around the second game, centered on Cerberus's experiments on humans;
  • Deception — the controversial one: fans found so many continuity errors that the publisher promised revisions;
  • the Andromeda trilogy — Nexus Uprising, Initiation and Annihilation — expands the expedition's story.

Comics

  • Redemption — the bridge between the first and second games: Liara hunts for Shepard's body, and the Shadow Broker thread starts here;
  • Evolution — the origin of the Illusive Man, Cerberus's leader;
  • Invasion — Aria and Omega station, setting up the third game's Omega DLC;
  • Homeworlds, Foundation, Discovery and other short arcs — stories about individual squadmates and corners of the galaxy.
There were also mobile spin-offs — Mass Effect: Galaxy and Mass Effect: Infiltrator — but they were delisted long ago and barely touch the canon.

Mass Effect 5: cancellation and the series' future

Mass Effect: Universe (Mass Effect 5)

  • Developer: BioWare;
  • Genre: sci-fi RPG;
  • Platforms: were not announced;
  • Release date: was not announced;
  • Status: development ended on October 21, 2026.

On October 21, 2026, EA announced BioWare's closure and canceled the next Mass Effect. A small team had been working on the game, which the publisher described as still being in early development.

A day later, an internal trailer leaked under the title Mass Effect: Universe. The two-minute video has the feel of a spy thriller: a former Alliance soldier meets an asari in a bar, their conversation turns into a gunfight involving biotic powers, and Liara T'Soni comes to his aid. Intercut with these scenes are shots of space travel, a snow-covered planet, and a team gathered around a galaxy map. An opening notice identifies it as in-engine footage using pre-production assets, so the trailer doesn't establish how close the game was to completion.

EA hasn't announced plans for another studio to continue the series. Mass Effect could return in the future, but no new project has been confirmed to replace the canceled game.

FAQ

Quick answers to the questions people ask most about the Mass Effect play order.

What order should I play Mass Effect in?

Start with the original trilogy strictly by number — Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 3. That's both the release order and the story order. Mass Effect: Andromeda is a separate story you can play after the trilogy or on its own.

Where should a newcomer start in 2026?

With Mass Effect Legendary Edition: the whole trilogy remastered, with all the key add-ons, in one package. It's the simplest way into the series.

Do I need to finish the trilogy before Andromeda?

No. Andromeda takes place in another galaxy and isn't directly tied to Shepard's story. The trilogy adds context to the universe, but it isn't a requirement.

Do save files carry over between games?

Yes. The trilogy carries your decisions from game to game: who lived, what happened to species and the Council, who you romanced. In Legendary Edition you pick your imported Shepard when you start the next game, right inside the collection.

What order should I play the DLC in?

Three rules matter most: play Arrival last in the second game, start From Ashes at the beginning of the third, and save Citadel for near the third game's finale but before the point of no return. The rest you can take as you go.

Is there a new Mass Effect coming?

The project BioWare was working on has been canceled. On October 21, 2026, EA announced the studio's closure and the end of development on the next Mass Effect. Whether another studio will continue the series remains unknown.
